Step out of myself

Whew! RL has really taken a bit out of me this last little while. I did find out that we've been nominated for the SL AVI Choice awards for Best Blog - and its a complete honour to be nominated! Although we've been on a hiatus, this blog is very important to us and we're happy that folks out there enjoy it enough to nominate it.

While I've popped in to SL when I'm able, I've found some great deals! Right now the "My 60L Secret Sale" is on and they have some fantastic items for all types! Their blog gives you a peek at some of their things, but touch their subscribos so you can get the notecard of all of the locations.

Black is Fair in Vegas

Who doesn't want a fantasy?

There are so many awesome things in SL that are not a part of the mainstream and part of the fun of SL can be discovering that awesomeness. One of the many draws of SL for people is the ability to be someone who you wouldn't be in Real Life - for instance, a fantasy, futuristic or historical person.

And that brings us to the look today! FATEwear- a gorgeous mesh menswear store has started to release a new line of role play clothing called "FATEplay" and it is amazeballs if you're looking for a medieval/fantasy look. With that of course, you need some appropriate hair and what luck! The Hair Fair is going on right now and proceeds from the sale of hair during the fair goes to Wigs for Kids! Lots of different kinds of hair including some great fantasy/medieval styles! I picked up a great one from *Calico*.

The only thing missing? A place to wear it! I highly highly highly recommend you check out The Realm of Mystara - the detail of the sims is mind boggling. Make sure you check out the rules and grab an observer tag if you're just checking out the view. Perhaps stay a while and get wrapped up in the world? Its an easy thing to do!

I'm so excited I don't even know where to begin with this post. But I need to hurry so I can get back to buying stuff! If you've never been to [The Plastik] - now is the time to go. If you HAVE been, but its been a while, getcher butt down there now before you miss the awesomeness.

Batter up! This outfit from :.::Hot Stuff::.: is definitely a home run! And I have to say from experience that baseball or softball is a pretty decent game to play for those of all abilities. Why not give it a go this summer?

Summer Vacation

Summer vacation is here for almost all North American children who attend public school, and for the kids, its a much needed break. For the parents - its the beginning of a juggling act that it is surpassed only by the events following the birth of a new child.

And for my family, it means going to the museum. Do you like to go? Big or small they all have lots of things for you to see, do and learn. There are even some great ones in Second Life!

farewell to Glitterati

Only a couple more days left to shop the inworld store of Adorkable Poses, and alas, another well-loved props/pose shop is closing its doors.

Glitterati items will still be available on Marketplace, and Katey Coppola expects to add new products along the way, but at a much more leisurely pace with no particular schedule. Follow the image link for more details behind her decision.

Garage Fair and Newness

This week has me beat, I'm not gonna lie... buuuuut here's a look of the day! (and some event links that go along with what I've found.)

Blueberry has an adorable-yet-sexy belted dress in various colours available as a Group Gift. They also have a whole shelf full of previous group gifts. If you haven't been there for a while, go check it out!

The Garage Designer Fair is on right now too, so if you're looking for something new and like the style of garage bands, grunge or pop-like-punk - you probably want to check this out. And you know what? Even if you don't - you probably want to check it out. Lots of stores have gift boxes and each corner of the sim has a section that has "20L or less" discounts from the participating stores.

Truth Hair has opened up again after their sale! The entire store is redone, there are lots of great new styles and there are new colour packs! Be sure to try a colour demo before you consider a purchase, but the styles are as cute as ever!

Adorkable Poses is closing!

Here's the word from Adorkable Peapod:

It’s been a long time coming… it’s time to close Adorkable Poses. I have had an amazing four years of making poses and getting to know some wonderful people. My real life has just gotten so busy that I am not able to keep up with my store as I would like. Thank you all for your love, support and friendship. I never dreamt that what started out as a fun little hobby for a stay at home Mom could turn into something that actually helped my family financially. I couldn’t have done it without my amazing customers and I appreciate it so much. Thank you to the bloggers that have also been so kind to blog my poses. You all are such an asset to store owners and I know I wouldn’t have made it this far without you. A special thank you to my friend and biggest supporter, Sasy Scarborough. Without you, I would never have even had a store to begin with. I will forever treasure our friendship and every bit of business and personal advice that you ever gave me.

Everything in my mainstore is 50% or more off, now through June 9th. I will do my best to get everything up on Marketplace. If you have any unused store credit, now is the time to use it as it will be gone after June 9th. You can check your rewards balance at the front of the store. So sad to see this creative shop close down its inworld presence. Adorkable Poses fill a unique niche of fun, flirty, cutely awkward; i.e. quite true to life. They're fun to "try on" even if you aren't necessarily shopping for poses - and trying them out almost always means you're about to buy one or two after you see just how cool they are. The ability to try them out will soon be lost, so get over to the shop before June 9. Half-off prices raise the incentive to try out a few extra!

Holy Moly!

I admit, I'm not caffeinated enough today to think up some quirky and fun accompanying text, but this stuff speaks for itself - and holy moly there is a lot going on in SL lately - not the least of which is the plethora of awesome gifts and sales right now!

.:cheeky:. just put out a new release that matches perfectly with their group gift! The Ela tank! comes in lots of great shades and the Tutu Skirt! looks gorgeous with all of them!

::Modish:: has some gorgeous group gift skins right now in a lighter and darker shade - I feel like a supermodel in them and the very famous >Truth< Hair has an amazing sale right now on their hair - most are on for 75L$ and some for even cheaper! The sim is generally full, but trust me, its worth clicking "Teleport" over and over again to see this sale!

Felicity has released a gorgeous new style of their trademark stilettos - Nadine is classy with a bite! Their spiked chunky heels are menu driven with metal change and hide options for the little pointy bits. I'm showing Black (which are an affordable and "worth it" 355L$), but the "Blue Suede" color is currently a group gift!

aaand last, but not least, in my awesome finds today is a pose pack from Nani Poses! I popped on by there today to see what I could find and I was shocked to find their posepack 2 was only 50L$ - that's pretty freakin' amazing considering there are 10 poses in this pack! I'm sure you'll all be seeing them here for a while, but I'm also sure you won't mind - they're lovely poses that will work well for bloggers. :)

Sometimes, you just need a castle! Bring out your knights and ladys-in-waiting, or don your tinkers, tailors or thieves. Today's Photospot is taking you to Alenquer Manor, a land with its own castle, its own market, its own chapel, its own tranquility, its own time.

While there is much to see in this mainland kingdom, our Spot is right here, on a curve of the cobblestone gatehouse pathway.  Whether you face yourself as entering the courtyard or exiting, or even just tarrying, there are plentiful nearby props and relevant backgrounds to provide excellent portrait support. (But you'll have to bring your own unicorn.) ;)

Shadows, yes. Windlight, yes. Depth, yes. You can use all your visual tools here. The stonework is highly accommodating. The sharp edges and the large chains make interesting shadowing.

If you are lucky enough, you might encounter King Tristan, the ruler of Alenquer. His Majesty welcomed me to the kingdom and encouraged me to visit often, explore the castle and grounds, emphasizing that it is open to one and all, inviting many visitors. With such an excellent royal welcome, let's not disappoint him. *smile*

Evale - an Ikon!

Have you ever opened your SL closet and, although its huge, you find you need something new? That happened to me the other day. To top it off I was feeling rather lazy, so I took to the marketplace to help me find a new outfit and within a few clicks, I'd found my new favorite. So much so that I've been wearing it for two days in a completely uncharacteristic move on my part!

The added bonus? Its only 49L$!

Evale has boxed up this entire outfit - top, mesh sweater, mesh skinny jeans and boots! I was shocked to find such a good deal, but so very pleased to find that it all fit fantastically. On my second day of wearing, I was also delighted to remember that the Ikon group gift is out right now! I hopped on over to pick it up and the "Denim" eyes are GORGEOUS!

My location today? I'm in front of a mesh, 2-prim book case in my new living room  When I say bookcase, I mean the case and everything on it.  You can get the entire set (and much more) at LAQ in-world store, or on their marketplace. It is seriously worth it. The most realistic items while remaining low prim - I'm still amazed at the quality.

One of the aspects of Second Life that I wish I could bring into meatspace is the use of glow and fullbright on mixed layers of fantastical vegetation. I just love the stuff. While I wouldn't want *all* physical trees and plants to be brightly shining, a few places here or there could be nice. Or perhaps just in special areas that are surely magical to begin with, such as today's Photospot on New Atoll.

This glowing glen is said to be a retreat for elven and fairyfolk "with a part of dark creatures" as well, but the use of weapons or unsolicited biting is prohibited, so there's nothing to fear. Today's SLurl will place you in the glen, not so far from the welcome platform, and you will be surrounded by what appears to be a nearly endless copse of glowing vegetation.

What sort of avatar fits best in such a place? Any, surely, but I aimed toward the magical end of the spectrum with this gentle spring fairy. Rather than working with static poses, I set her to dance, and there, in the magical, glowing glen, as I fiddled with Windlight settings and camera angles, she danced and danced.

Because she was in continuous motion, the challenge arose to snap a desired pose *before* seeing it in the frame. Also because she was in continuous motion, I snapped a great deal more shots than I usually would. It becomes a fun game that pays off in the end, as the captured positions are fresh and unexpected. 

In a location filled with so much alpha, it's generally a good idea to avoid alpha on your model when possible. My fairy's dress was mesh, and her hair mostly sculpts. Her very alpha wings, however, held their own surprisingly well, being completely visible in every shot that was taken. Perhaps that was due to a little bit of the magic that can be found in this glowing glen.

Hot Elephantes?

With the spring season comes the great pull of RL from those of us addicted to SL - but its still a fantastic rush to find awesome things in world and my desire to share is still strong!

There are a fantastic number of fashion/genre fairs going on at the moment and if you haven't checked any out recently, just do a search for "Fair" in-world to delight your eyes. Today though, I'm going to take a break from the fair items that you're probably being bombarded with to show you a few regular new releases (but gorgeous ones!).

:.::Hot Stuff::.: has quite a few things going on at the moment, as they're known to do - but this new outfit caught my eye - and it comes with Lola's Tango appliers! It has untucked and tucked in versions and its just the right mix of sexy, cute and professional to look fabulous in anyone's SL wardrobe.

I'm showing more poses than normal because I could not get enough of the pose packs from Elephante! The poses shown are from their display on The Black Market. They also have a giant load of new release poses, some group gifts and and a pack for the Perfect Wardobe event! Trust me, Elephante is well worth a peek!

Photospot: Bridging the Islands

The Onigashima sim is the home of several stores that feature traditional Japanese items. It is also the location of our 'Spot for today. The greeting you receive invites you to enjoy the stores and the scenery. The first thing you'll notice upon arrival is the automatic change of lighting to the sim's special Windlight settings, bathing the sim in a rich magenta-brown, illuminated by a golden, setting sun. The next thing you'll notice is that you're going to need to hike a little to reach today's Photospot, high atop one of several arched bridges that connect these shop islands together.

Of *course* you'll be exploring the entire sim. How could you resist it? But for now, make your way to the spot in the middle of the bridge - I'm assuming you'll have a nice, red beacon to follow! Once there, start snapping. Be sure to check yourself from all directions. The bridges feature a multitude of torii, creating countless natural-found frames to work within.

Although shadows don't deliver much impact in such diffused light, you might want to turn them on anyway, to take advantage of depth of field. This spot is especially accommodating for Depth. And if you get tired of the sim's lighting? Change it! Yes, modifying your Windlight settings here works just as well as elsewhere. And when you're in a setting less diffused, the shadows will come to life. With all the railwork and foliage, the shadows are simply beautiful.

Other than some simple camera nudges to hide a shop sign here and there, there are no bad angles to avoid. Zoom in tightly using Ctrl (Cmd) + 0. Zoom out widely using Ctrl (Cmd) + 8. (Ctrl/Cmd + 9 will return your view to the normal zoom.) Close up or wide lens, you're going to find something quite pleasant for your camera to grab.

Now that you've explored this spot from all its many angles, it's time to go ahead and examine the rest of the sim. Try a variety of times of day, various camera angles and a selection of Windlights. You won't be disappointed.

Seems like just about everyone these days is coming out with fully-mesh avatars that are smaller than typical and lean to the cute and whimsical end of the spectrum. An avatar like that calls for a special place to photograph it. So, bring out your Petites, Dolls, Littles and everything darling. Today's Photospot is a lovely little parcel packed with plenty of flowers, colorful sprites and gentle rain to support and handle all the cute and whimsical you can give it.

You might recall the (now-defunct) Embryo sim. Today's spot is also made by Siestabril Nitely, one of the Embryo creators. This mini-Embryo, labeled as home to the Un Jour shop, somehow manages to contain much of the charm and whimsy of the full sim original. Toss a little Windlight around to alter the sun's direction or color, and there's plenty to keep you busy for a time as you photograph your own little fairy tale. 

The SLurl will give you a beacon toward one end of the building, but this is a small parcel with something like fifteen hundred million great photo angles, so definitely wander around and keep your camera on the move. Also, note that this area is solidly stuffed with prims, most of which are alpha and packing glow, so it might be a kindness to your computer to reduce your Draw distance for the duration you are here. You can always turn it up again when you leave...if you ever want to leave.

The Skin We're In

Okay firstly, when I logged in this morning I noticed we're over 20,000 page views and that alone has made my day. Thanks peeps!

When I logged in to SL this morning, I got a few notices on what's new at TDR Fusion, so I figured I would go down and check it out, thinking - of course - that I'd maybe pick up one or two things. My entire SL wallet later, I emerged gleefully happy with my new purchases. I dug through them to show you some goodies!

There are a few amazing skins available this time and I was pleasantly surprised to find one that supports and includes Tango appliers! Essences set out a few skin packs for 70L$. Each tone includes various options for eyebrow colour, cheekbone blush and cleavage. Of course, the skin works perfectly well for those without the added chest stuffs, and is so pretty in either case.

*BOOM* has some adorable and sexy undies out in a few colours - if you've never tried things from *BOOM* before - you should. The detail is amazing. Now is the time to try - 70L$ will get you panties and bra that also includes tango appliers for those a little more endowed.  Yourskin & Yourshape also set out some fabulous shoes. They're so easy to set up and they look great! I know I'll be wearing them a lot - they'll go with almost anything. Ok now stop looking and go check it out for yourself!

Photospot on SL Unearthed is a semi-regular feature that highlights a Second Life spot that is a cool place at which to take portrait photos inworld. Not an entire sim, not even a complete parcel, but just a single specific location - a spot - with portrait opportunity.

Today's Photospot takes you inside one of those great Grey Kurka builds you see here and there around the grid, and it's just as visually delicious indoors as out. The "Cleopatra Brimstone" welcomes visitors by describing herself as "a darkly luminous Gothic build for your inner vampire, goblin and ghoul.  No blood splatters here,  Just elegance, beauty and mystery." The description also adds, "And do speak to the resident...Santiago."

Taking the stair/rampway to your left, follow the beacon to the second story of this palace and get yourself comfortable in the open air parlor. You don't need to bring any poses with you. There are pillows, blankets, chairs, divans and more, all equipped with pose settings. But if you do need that special poseball, you'll be happy to note that Build is enabled, with a 1 minute autoreturn; time enough to rez a poseball and jump onto it.

You also won't need to turn on shadows (unless you want to). The palace is brimming with its own shadows and special shadings. (I had shadows turned on for only one of the images I'm showing here.) Treasures abound everywhere you look. The textures are deep and rich. You're forgiven if you reach your hand against the screen while trying to touch things. Too, everything seems to have a tale to tell; extra points for you if you're able to capture the tales with your camera.

I know, I know, it's just too tempting to restrict your view to this one parlor area. So go ahead, explore the rest of Cleopatra Brimstone. You might want to play the harpsichord in the main living room, or admire the Ariel Brearly art on display on the lower level. And, oh yes...don't forget to say hello to Santiago - when you find him...her...it...!

Glitzy in New York

There is SO much going on in SL right now its hard to keep up! This outfit I picked up just today and there are so many more things that I have a hankering to check out! I'm just stopping in really quickly to give you a superfast lowdown before I'm off to the rest of the fairs and things that are all happening right now!

Unique Clothing has released a few St Patty's day gifts! They're FREE with no group or anything! This dress comes with everything! The shoes, dress and a little hair shamrock hairpiece that is just adorable.

The Bi-Annual Cart Sale at The Wash is also still on - they have so much awesome stuff there is really hard to pick and choose. But really, why should you when everything is just 10L or less! I've been a few times, including tonight to nab some jewelry for my glitzy look. N@N@ has some gorgeous pieces out and I think I got half (or more) of the items on the cart!

Owly Indigo has a thing about birds. Drawn to the virtual sort in SL since 2007, she's built up quite a collection. There are undoubtedly far too many birds in her inventory to rez all at once, but luckily for us, Owly is sharing over a hundred of them with us in her Indigo Aviary, today's Photospot. 

In and around the romantic beachhouse (and also its adjacent lagoon), you'll find seafowl, and peafowl, quails and chickens, lovebirds and songbirds, puffins and parrots, domestic and exotic  - many, many types of birds from very small to quite large. And yes, Owly has collected quite a few owls, also. They blink and hoot and flutter their wings at you.

The aviary area has a timeless feeling to it, leaving open a wide range of possibilities to accentuate. Try something modern or antebellum, victorian or renaissance, mainstream or fantasy. You need be mindful of only a few items to exclude from the camera frame if you're aiming for a bygone period. Have some fun with Windlight, and oh yes, do play with shadows here. Include the birds in your frames or simply zoom in for your portrait; either way, the Indigo Aviary is sure to inspire.
